Modern Benoni
A sharp, unbalancing answer to 1.d4 where Black plays for the win from the very start.
The Modern Benoni (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 e6 4.Nc3 exd5 5.cxd5 d6) deliberately throws the game out of balance against 1.d4. Black accepts a space disadvantage and a slightly backward d6-pawn, and in return gets a dangerous queenside pawn majority, the half-open e-file, and a powerful dark-squared bishop on g7 that rakes the long diagonal.
It is a true fighting opening: the structure is asymmetric and the play is concrete, so draws are rare and both sides take real risks. Black’s trumps are the …b5 and …f5 breaks and fast piece play; White’s are extra central space and a pawn storm with e4–e5 or f4. A long-time favourite of attacking players from Tal to Kasparov, the Modern Benoni rewards energetic, accurate chess and punishes passivity from either side.
Main lines
- 6.e4 g6 7.Nf3 Bg7 8.Be2 O-OThe Classical main line — White develops naturally; Black prepares …Re8, …a6 and …b5.
- 6.e4 g6 7.f4 Bg7 8.Bb5+The Taimanov (Flick-knife) Attack — the sharpest test; White grabs space and disrupts Black’s development.
- 6.Nf3 g6 7.g3 Bg7 8.Bg2The Fianchetto Variation — a calmer, positional approach against the Benoni structure.
- 6.e4 g6 7.Nf3 Bg7 8.h3 O-O 9.Bd3The Modern main line — White prevents …Bg4; Black still goes for …Re8 and …b5.
Key plans & ideas
- The …b5 break: Black’s queenside majority and …a6/…b5 (often prepared with …Nbd7, …Rb8 or a pawn sacrifice) are the main source of counterplay.
- The …f5 break: undermine White’s e4 and open lines for the g7-bishop and the rooks toward the king.
- The g7-bishop is your best piece: keep the long diagonal open and aim it at d4, b2 and White’s centre.
- Use the half-open e-file: …Re8 pressures e4 and supports the …f5 and …b5 breaks.
- Mind White’s centre: meet the e4–e5 push in time, or White’s space advantage rolls forward and crushes you.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Modern Benoni sound?
It is fully playable and has been used at the highest level, but it is sharp and concrete: Black must know the plans and the critical lines, especially the Taimanov Attack. It is a winning-attempt opening, not a safe one.
What does Black get for the space disadvantage?
A queenside pawn majority with the …b5 break, the half-open e-file, and a strong g7-bishop on the long diagonal — dynamic counterplay in return for cramped space and a backward d6-pawn.
What is the most dangerous line against the Modern Benoni?
The Taimanov (Flick-knife) Attack with 7.f4 and 8.Bb5+: White grabs space and disrupts Black’s development. It needs precise preparation, which is why some players reach the Benoni by a different move order.
Is the Modern Benoni good for beginners?
It teaches dynamic, plan-based chess — the …b5 and …f5 breaks and the g7-bishop — but it is theory-sensitive and risky. Improving players who enjoy sharp, attacking games will get the most from it.
